Publishing my book – A publisher vs. self-publishing
A publisher
Traditional offset press prints hundreds of books at a time. The downside is that your investment cost is very high because you immediately have to pay for hundreds of books. A publishing company, however, will also take away many worries and support you.
Advantages
- Corrections are done for you
- Promotion is done by the publisher
- Are you a famous writer? Then you get paid to write
- The book content and cover are professionally designed
Disadvantages
- High start-up costs
- Script must first be approved
- Long process (of corrections, deletions, …)
- No / little say in the design
- The publisher is the owner of your book
- Storage required for all printed books
- Profit is given away to a large extent
Create My Books (self-publishing)
When you publish your own book, you are self-publishing. Books are digitally printed in small runs or even a piece. You hold everything in your own hands, and therefore, you have to do everything yourself.
Benefits
- No setup fees
- Your book can be put online immediately (no approval required from other parties)
- Your own professionally printed book (without having to invest)
- You design content and cover
- Easy to issue new versions
- Easy to reorder books
- Set your own royalties (earn more)
- Private, share with friends and family
- Offer for sale through our online shop Shop My Books
Disadvantages
- Make corrections yourself
- Self-promote your book
- No sales in the traditional bookshops
Do you want full control yourself? Or would you rather leave this up to someone else?
